This project represents Inside Out's first venture into the Republic of Ireland, a medium sized house extension and refurbishment of one of our own architects' family home in Dublin.
Dolores and Steve Kavangh Snr, the clients in question, wanted something spacious and light that would connect them to their sizeable garden. Since moving into the house almost 20 years ago, this garden has effectively been hidden from sight by a blank rear wall, so a large amount of glazing was used to creat a panoramic view out. A rooflight runs the length of the extension to allow evening light to enter this predominantly north-facing space.
To counteract the clean clinical lines of the glass, Steve Jnr decided to build the solid elements of the extension in timber frame and expose as much of it as possible within the space, with concealed LED lights illuminating the exposed timber joists.
The extension is due for completion in November 2014.
