Sustainability
In recent years the gravitas given to sustainable design has justifiably grown, but still lags behind what is necessary and what is possible. At Inside Out, we don't see sustainability as a bonus but a prerequisite. With the perpetual growth of urban centres, It is the major concern of our time.
In practice, the most sustainable approach is to reuse and reinhabit as much as possible, ending the cycle of demolishing and rebuilding. We aim to look at life cycle costs and repayment timelines to see how sustainability can not only be affordable but profitable in the long term.
As time and technology marches on, we keep an open mind to new systems and materials, favouring integrated scientific solutions over ill-conceived afterthoughts.
It is generally true that the most sustainable buildings are the ones that stand for the longest amount of time, offering the greatest return for the initial energy invested. With this in mind, we aim to create architecture that is relevant today and likely to remain so for years to come, spaces full of light and enjoyment that people want to be in and retain for whatever needs they may have.
The greatest culmination of these aspirations to date is our Kilburn Apartments project, a collection of 14 residential units built to Passivhaus standards and requiring minimal energy for heating, a relevant aspiration in the face of recent energy price increases. It is our hope that such avant garde ideas will quickly become the rule rather than the exception.
